With the single incident that takes place in each year, the 10th anniversary of the Mumbai terror attacks will mark the watershed point of a decade of violence in the port city. The terror event on Nov. 26, 2008, began at around 7:40 p.m. and lasted through the early hours of Nov. 28 when militants killed 166 people over several days in an assault that focused the media’s attention on India.

Here’s a timeline of key moments, organized by intelligence officials, journalists and parents of the victims, that took place during the 11-day terrorist attack.

Monday, Nov. 23

News goes live: A lone gunman opens fire at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.

Wednesday, Nov. 24

India downgrades security level: The government downgrades the alert level from its high level. Two men suspected of supplying food to the terrorists after they infiltrated the airport are nabbed.

Wednesday, Nov. 24

Mahima Kaul, the sister of Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, the only surviving gunman, is abducted by the terrorists.

Friday, Nov. 26

Mumbai police rescue Kasab, an alias Dilip Doshi, and Shahid Omar Shaikh, alias Fahim Ansari, from a Mumbai restaurant after an hour-long shootout.

Friday, Nov. 26

At 11:59 p.m., 10 gunmen overpower and attack Mumbai’s CST railway station. Some 160 people are killed, including the attackers.

After ending their 7:30 a.m. attack on a hospital, the gunmen head to Nariman House, a synagogue in Mumbai’s upscale Upper Nariman street. Thirty-seven people die in the terrorist attack at Nariman House.
