What took him so long? Former Vice President Joe Biden has picked his choice for the man in charge of U.S. drug safety: Billionaire biotech CEO Robert Califf. As Fox News Channel’s Jeff Pegues reported, Biden was originally seeking a rival candidate to medical consultant Margo Schlanger:
Jeff Pegues: Biden and his supporters have already spread the word to health care insiders. So many have started to suggest that though the move could be seen as political it’s also practical. Sources close to Biden say he not only is seeking a woman, but someone with a doctorate, someone with medical experience to end this Sisyphean search.
Liz Claman: Here’s what I think Mr. Biden is thinking because ultimately what Margo Schlanger would have brought to the issue would have been work experience and she was smart but also had some key contacts to potentially make this thing happen.
Jeff Pegues: And then now you have Bob Califf. Who many people look at as the guy that could do it, a guy who’s going to get the president’s attention, a guy who’s experienced, a guy who’s proved he can make deals, make industry work, a guy who is, if you look at his background, has literally done all of that and bring things to the table in making things happen at the FDA.
