If you watched the VMAs, then you know it was a pretty fun weekend. Not only did Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande make our morning look nicer, but they killed it on stage. Their reunion was pure perfection and set a new bar for pop. It was much needed after the absence of Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga, and their inclusion should have been a welcome sign that pop and hip-hop is still thriving. Luckily, there was some good news to come from both the VMAs and the AMAs.
At the MTV VMAs, Drake, whose album is the best of the year, was left off of the Top Artist, Top Male Artist, and Top Hot 100 Artist. He was called out by Travis Scott for the snub, but you could say Scott deserved the honor and for that reason alone, he deserved to win. The rapper snatched the “Moonman” (a new award) for the all-genre Top Male Artist, as he released one of the best albums of the year.
Drake is also winning his battles with Kanye West. They had several major differences back in the day, but these days, there is peace. In fact, Drake thanked Yeezy at the MTV VMAs for winning the Lemonade Album. He even shared that he “would’ve given [Kanye] the award” if he had one. And it sounds like both are winning their battles.
Then there is Katy Perry. She recently cleaned house. First, she fired her longtime collaborator, Timbaland, who released Perry’s “Slave 4 U” and produced her album, and now she is firing back at her latest hit single, “Swish Swish.” During her “Katy Perry Night” concert at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY, she said her entire team is leaving her this week and announcing all the new songs that will be featured on her upcoming album. At this point, she is literally fighting back. She did have a few pleasant surprise guests, including Nick Jonas and Big Sean, but her hit single, “Swish Swish,” is off the table. This move seems like a display of power, and it seems like people are willing to listen.
When it comes to Grammys, Beyonce and Kanye West have been fighting all week. Although Beyonce won for Album of the Year, it came with a lot of criticism. She ignored West’s album, “The Life of Pablo,” which was such a big deal. Kanye tweeted that Beyonce’s Lemonade was the “most amazing, beautiful album,” but in an interview on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” she said she will not co-host his new talk show this fall. If this is the state of their friendship, then we will see what happens when their new daughter is born in a few months.
As much as we love Michael Jackson, we also love pop and hip-hop artists, and it looks like both categories at the AMAs are just getting started.
