Storm Alberto becomes a hurricane as it chugs up the coast of Florida from Georgia to Georgia. Before landfall, as the storm gathers force, it races across the Florida peninsula and across the Tennessee river to the northern Gulf coast.

Scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announce that they now have a definitive date to observe the most powerful year of hurricanes: 23 to 25 September – the Atlantic hurricane season. (This is typically four to six months before the official season begins on 1 June.)

Hurricane Helene makes landfall in Ireland, dropping as much as 70mm of rain in a matter of hours. The storm, which died out a short time later, killed one person, brought down many trees and left extensive flooding damage.

The season officially begins on 1 June with hurricane Hector forming in the central Pacific.
Hurricane Florence makes landfall in North Carolina and causes catastrophic damage. It is the first hurricane to make landfall in the US since Hurricane Irma, a category 4 storm, which killed more than 40 people and caused huge damage in Florida.
